Finding Forever Page 10

“Earth to Cassie,” Stephanie said pulling her from her thoughts.

  Cassie blushed.

“I was just telling Jake and Melissa that we should go out before they head back to the city.”

“Yes, we must,” Cassie said regaining her composure and looking at David once more. She wondered if she should ask him to come along, but didn’t get the chance because Stephanie beat her to it. She was delighted when he said yes.

The guests started leaving and Cassie excused herself.

“I’ll be back in a minute.”

Cassie thanked her guests as they left, watching out of the corner of her eye to make sure David was still there. When everyone was gone, she made her way back over. She still couldn’t believe how well the night had gone and even though she dreaded the clean-up she faced in the morning she couldn’t help but smile.

“You’re looking very happy,” Stephanie said catching her off guard. “The others are getting ready to leave, but I thought you might want to say goodbye to David, so I said I’d go find you.”

Cassie smiled at her friend. “Where did you come from? I thought you were with the others?”

“I was, I just had to grab something upstairs. Come on or they’ll be gone.” Stephanie said pulling Cassie towards the living room.

Jake and Melissa had settled on one of the sofas and David was standing by the Christmas tree admiring the ornaments.

“Go get him,” Stephanie whispered in Cassie’s ear as she pushed her forward.

Cassie moved into the room and David turned and smiled at her. He had such a beautiful smile, she could look at his face forever.

“I’ve had a wonderful evening,” he said as she got nearer. “Thank you for making me feel so welcome and for the dance.”

Cassie felt her face blush as she looked into his deep blue eyes.

  “It was my pleasure.”

Jake and Melissa stood just then. “We’re off now Cass,” Jake said. “We’ll see you during the week.”

“Sorry,” Cassie mouthed to David as she turned to see off her guests.

“I have to go too,” he said and followed.

“Not so fast, you two,” Stephanie said stopping them at the living room door.

They both stopped, a look of confusion on their faces.

“Look up, it's tradition you know,” Stephanie said beaming.

Cassie looked up and gasped. Her grandmother’s mistletoe was hanging just where it always had been.

  “But how?” she asked

“The bottom of the box,” Stephanie replied winking at her. “Now go on, you have to or it’s bad luck.”

Cassie blushed and looked at David. He looked nervous.

“It’s okay if you don’t want to,” she whispered stepping closer to him.

She watched him swallow deeply, his Adam's apple bobbing in his throat. He moved closer too and looked deep into her eyes before touching his soft luscious lips to hers. Her breath left her and her heart pounded in her chest. It was the best kiss she’d ever had, and she wanted so much to deepen it.

David pulled back and smiled. “I’ve wondered how your lips tasted for five years.”

Cassie looked at him, a stunned expression on her face.

“It was worth the wait,” he grinned.

“But, I don’t understand,” she fumbled.

“I was here, five years ago. I watched you all night waiting for the chance to get you under this mistletoe and just when I had some idiot bumped into me and fell. You caught him and then well,” he shrugged, “you know the rest.”

“Ben,” was all Cassie could say. She remembered how he’d fallen right into her under the mistletoe and how she’d taken it as a sign that he was the one. If only she’d seen David that night. She would have known.

“I’m sorry,” was all she could say.

“I’m not, that kiss was worth waiting for and I hope there’ll be many more.”

Cassie took in a deep breath. She’d been wrong about grandma’s mistletoe. It did work, and it did bring true love. It had brought David to her five years ago, but she’d been too blind to see.

“I’d like that very much,” she smiled at David before looking up at the mistletoe. Thank you, grandma, you’ve brought me my magic.
